Frequently asked questions

Is massage right for me?
We recommend that if you have health issues, that you first see your doctor to find out if massage is recommended or beneficial for you at this time.

Do I need to see a massage therapist or a chiropractor?
Often tight muscles can cause skeletal misalignment and vice versa.  See your physician and/or chiropractor to see if that applies to you.  Chiropractic care and massage therapy work well together and often both are needed to afford you longer lasting results.  Ask your doctor.

Why do you need the information on the intake form?
On your first visit to Balanced Touch, we will ask you to fill out a confidential health history form.  This information is vital so that the therapist can be aware of any health problems that might be affected by the massage.  In subsequent visits, please discuss with the therapist any new health issues that have occurred.

New clients can complete the Confidential Health History prior to their appointment by printing this form. <link to pdf coming soon>

Which type of massage is right for me?
Let us know what is going on with you and together we can discuss which type of massage would best suit your needs.  See the <Services> page of this site to learn more about the types of massage we offer.

Can massage help Fibromyalgia?
Ask your doctor.  Many physicians recommend massage therapy as one of the management protocols for Fibromyalgia. Many reference sites indicate that a healthy diet, exercise, and regular massage sessions can help you manage the symptoms of this condition.

 What should I wear?
Dress comfortably.  For the massage you should undress to your comfort level.  All sessions will be conducted with proper established draping methods to ensure privacy, professionalism, and modesty.

If you are getting an orthopedic massage that may involve stretching techniques, bring work out type clothing.  After the massage portion of your session, your therapist will leave the room to allow you to change into clothing suitable for the stretches that can be a part of your treatment.

Should I talk during the massage?
For any massage to be effective, communication between therapist and client is very important.  All clients will receive a short private interview prior to the massage to discuss any problem areas.  During the massage, communication is still important as it lets the therapist tailor the treatment for maximum benefit.  Please make your therapist aware if you are uncomfortable in any way during the massage.  It is up to you whether you wish to have additional conversation during the session.

How often should I get a massage?
This depends on your body.  Undoing chronic knots and tension built up over several years or more will not happen in a single massage session.  Be realistic about your expectations.  How often you get a massage is up to you and your therapist.

Results are best achieved with an integrated program that includes exercise; changes in your posture, habits, and movement patterns; relaxation techniques; and a regular program of massage.

What causes muscle tension and how does massage help?
Overwork of our muscles builds up lactic acid and other toxins in our muscles.  This causes the muscles to become tight and to prevent optimum amounts of fresh blood and thereby oxygen to replenish those muscles.  Over time, this can result in the knots we often feel.

For recent occurrences of this phenomenon, often a repeat of the exercise will allow your body to work the muscle enough to excise those toxins.  For those knots accumulated over time, sometimes massage is the only way to get them to let go.

Massage helps remove the toxins from the muscles so that the tissues can return to normal and heal.

Why do I need to drink water after a massage?
Drinking plenty of water after a massage will help you stay hydrated and will help your body flush the toxins out of your system that were released by the massage.  We provide water on site for your convenience before and after the session.
